When Steve Spurrier resigned as South Carolina's head football coach, he had a clause in his contract that would allow him to start a different job in the school's athletic department, and he took it.

According to The Associated Press, Spurrier started his new job as a special assistant to the University of South Carolina's president, Harris Pastides, and athletic director, Ray Tanner. The Head Ball Coach will seemingly act as an ambassador for USC athletics, and has already met with boosters and donors at various sporting events.

The contract clause was included in his 2013 extension, The State reported, and Spurrier said he accepted the new role in January. It seems for now he will be working closely with the Gamecocks women's basketball team, which is currently 22-1 and ranked second in the nation.

"I go into the McGuire room halftime of (some basketball) game, see some booster people, shake a few hands, hang out with them a little bit," he told The State Monday.

"I meet with (athletics director Ray) Tanner a little bit, whatever he needs," he said. "I told him I want to be the associate A.D. for women's basketball."

Spurrier abruptly retired as South Carolina's head football coach in Oct. when the team got off to a slow start. Those struggles did not end, and South Carolina wound up finishing 3-9 overall and 1-7 against the SEC.

The school hired Will Muschamp as the new head football coach after the season ended.
