What's the best attire for a job interview? Your selections will vary depending on the type of job and industry you're interviewing with. Dress properly to impress them instantly, but the outfit you choose depends on whether you're interviewing at a company with a formal dress code, a casual startup, or for an informal student job or internship.

Here are the guidelines on how to dress for an interview, including advice on what to wear, how to impress a future employer, business vs. business casual attire, and general tips on dressing for success.

Business Attire for a Job Interview

The initial impression you make on a potential employer is the most important one. The primary judgment an interviewer creates is basically based on how you look and what you are wearing. That's why it's crucial to dress right for a job interview.

Normally, you want to wear business attire just like any other professionals. For men, this might mean a combination of suit jacket and slacks with a shirt and tie. A sweater and button-down can also be added depending on the outdoor and indoor temperature. For women, this might mean an elegant blouse and dress pants or a statement dress. You can also combine some of the latest trends of fashion into your outfit.

In both sexes, you should be mindful of the colors of the attire you wear for job interview. Do not wear outfits that are too bright or flashy. This can disturb a hiring manager. Choose from gray, white, navy blue, black, brown and other neutral tones to be safe.

Business casual outfits are less formal than a suit, but they are also more suitable for professional meet-ups and interviews. Informal ones are clothes like t-shirt and shorts or a sundress and sandals.

It is important to make sure that you know the dress code before you assume that business casual is the standard attire inside the company. If you aren't sure and you want to avoid further confusion, call the office and ask advice from the administrative coordinator or any contact person who scheduled the interview.

It is better to dress a bit more professional than the average employee at the company. If everyone wears shorts and t-shirts, you might wear pants and polo shirt for a more classy look.

If you have an interview at a startup company, blend with the company's standard. Instead of showing up in a black suit and dress shoes, opt for something that is relaxed but still well thought of. This is the perfect time to wear relaxed-fit khakis, dark-wash jeans, and a nice top.
