Moderate Drinking May Cause Problems For People Getting Older [VIDEO]

By

A new study suggests that people who drink alcohol at moderate levels could dull their aging brain. They might see some of their mental skills slowly vanishing as they age.

Drinking Could Cause Dulling Of Brain Activity

Several researchers have discovered that individuals who have been drinking alcohol regularly showed signs of a greater brain shrinkage than those who did not drink by old age. These people have lost more of their fluency of their language, which is usually a measure of memory and thinking skills, The Post Star reported.

For the individuals who drank alcohol moderately, the effects were also seen with them. The researchers revealed that these people only drank four to seven drinks a week and it still affected them. However, the findings revealed that it did prove that alcohol was to blame for this issue.

Experts Advise People To Be Skeptical About Alcohol Drinking

Director Tim Stockwell from the Center for Addictions Research at the University of Victoria said that people should be skeptical of the idea that drinking alcohol is actually healthy. They believe that moderate drinking is not as healthy as many others would say. He has also done his own studies on drinking in moderation, which some believe is good for the heart.

There were many studies that suggested moderate drinkers have lower heart disease rates compared to the ones who were heavy drinkers and non-drinkers too. Stockwell's own researcher revealed that those studies had critical flaws as well. These non-drinkers were actually former drinkers who likely quit for health reasons, while the people continued to drink as they aged were actually healthier from the start.

US Government Shows Guidelines For Recommended Drinking

The US government has some guidelines on what is recommended for alcohol intake for people. No more than one drink a day for women and two drinks a day for men. Uncertain heart benefits and known risks, which included accidents from traffic, acts of violence, and a link with breast cancer were cited, according to the official website for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
