President Obama to Create Task Force Aimed at Addressing Sexual Assault Problem in College

By

For the past year and beyond, sexual assault on college campuses remain an issue women are dealing with and now the President of the United States has taken notice.

President Barack Obama is planning to start an initiative aiming to eliminate sexual assault on college campuses, the Associated Press reported. He will sign a presidential memorandum Wednesday to create a task force that will carry out the initiative.

A recent White House report found that college women face the highest risk of being attacked than anyone in America. "Rape and Sexual Assault: A Renewed Call to Action" states one in every five women in college experience sexual assault and just 12 percent file a report.

The report, released Wednesday, found that the 22 million female and 1.6 male victims of rape experience depression, battle substance abuse and other chronic illnesses after their attack. In college, the risk is increased likely due to situations where binge drinking and drug use is prevalent.

The task force will have 90 days to craft recommendations for colleges to make in order to curb sexual assault on campus. Other issues colleges will be forced to face will be properly handling reported attacks, public awareness and coordination with state and federal authorities.

Valerie Jarrett, chair of the Council on Women and Girls, said Obama has taken the issue to heart as the nation's leader and as a father with teenage daughters. She also said Obama and the task force will want to find ways to involve young men in the initiative and influence a cultural change.

As has been the case at several colleges, the report will address the institution's responsibility to seek justice in each reported assault. The U.S. Education Department is currently handling several Title IX complaints from students who said their school tried to ignore their reported sexual assault or did not conduct a proper and thorough investigation.

The White House has said the federal government will set an example for colleges and universities by correcting the military's problem with sexual assault. Last month, Obama gave the Pentagon a year to fix how they respond to such allegations or more reforms would be on the way.
