Costco Bibles: Wholesale Store Under Fire For Labeling Christian Scriptures As Fiction
ByCostco issued an apology this week after receiving unwanted attention for labeling Bibles at its Southern California store as "fiction," the Los Angeles Times Reported.
Discovery Church Pastor Caleb Kaltenbach came across the Bibles labeled "fiction" while shopping for a gift in Simi Valley on Friday. He then took a photo and posted it on Twitter with the caption: "Costco has Bibles for sale under the genre of FICTION Hmmmm...," according to the Los Angeles Times.
"We take responsibility and should have caught the mistake. We are correcting this with them for future distribution," Costco said in a statement. "We greatly apologize for the error."
Members of Kaltenbach's congregation were insulted.
"I was completely offended," Shellie Dungan told KTLA-TV. "It's wrong, and I believe that the Bible is real."
Kaltenbach's tweet sparked a social media discussion among Christians and atheists regarding the text and its labeling. Costco was initially unresponsive to the criticism "after word of the fiction label spread quickly on social media, angering Christians, some of whom threatened to boycott the big box store," according to the Los Angeles Times.
After Fox News host Elisabeth Hasselbeck brought Kaltenbach on her show to discuss the incident, the company released a statement, blaming a distributor for mislabeling a "small percentage" of Bibles before sending them to the store.
Kaltenbach said the discussions the label has sparked have been good for the faith community.
"It's caused a lot of controversy, it's caused a lot of conversation, which I think conversation is good," he told KCBS-TV.
Costco said it is correcting the mistake for future distribution.
