Drunk Governor Deval Patrick Got Festive on a Few Spirits After Boston Marathon Suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev's Capture
ByMassachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick, in a candid talk, told employees at a Cambridge marketing firm Wednesday that he got "quite drunk" the night Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was caught, the Boston Herald reported.
Patrick gave an hour-long question and answer session with HubSpot co-founder Brian Halligan, who invited the governor to talk on career advice. Instead, Patrick gave his account of the Boston bombings.
He said the capture of the younger Tsarnaev, preceded by the elder Tamerlan's death, was a relief because it meant citizens would stop "bitching and moaning" about the "shelter in place" order he gave that day.
He talked about the phone conversation he had with President Barack Obama on his decision to put the city of Boston on an indefinite lockdown.
"The phone rang. It was the president. ... And he said, "Deval, I'm briefed. ... What are you going to do about the city? You can't keep it locked down indefinitely,'" Patrick told his audience. "I said, 'Mr. President, I know that... I'm trying to sort that out now'... Basically the state police had said we should end this... when we finish the door-to-door in Watertown. So if we haven't found him, we should say to people, 'Look, live your lives, but please be careful because he's still at large.'"
He told the marketing firm that after Dzhokhar was captured, he headed out to the Berkshires where he took a short swim and went out to dinner alone to read a book. He requested a corner table to be left un-disturbed. Maggie Merelle, co-owner of the West Stockbridge bistro Rouge she fulfilled his request.
"She starts bringing me things to drink as a celebration. And by the end of the meal, I was actually quite drunk, by myself," Patrick said.
Merelle told the Boston Herald she did not sense he was drunk.
"He wasn't tipsy. I never would have known," Merelle said, recalling Patrick had duck confit, french fries, soup, salad and a "glass of chardonnay or two."
Patrick also admitted that he did not pay his bill that night. Merelle, who said she was "honored to have him," said he "definitely" paid the tab he left.
