Florida Atlantic University Seeks to Fire Professor Who Supports Sandy Hook Conspiracy Theory

By

Florida Atlantic University is starting the process of terminating a professor accused of harassing the parents of a child who died three years ago in the Sandy Hook Elementary School in 2012.

Just after the third anniversary of the shooting that left their son Noah dead, Lenny and Veronique Pozner published an op-ed in The Sun-Sentinel detailing how James Tracy, a professor at FAU, "suggested that the shooting never occurred."

The Pozners said Tracy told them the massacre that left dead 20 students and six faculty members at a Newtown, Conn. elementary school was a conspiracy to bolster the Obama Administration's campaign for gun control. The Pozners claimed Tracy asked them to prove their son ever lived and sought to block them from keeping photos of Noah private.

On Wednesday, FAU publicly stated it issued Tracy a Notice of Proposed Discipline.

"Today, James Tracy, an associate professor in the School of Communication and Multimedia Studies, was served a Notice of Proposed Discipline - Termination by the Vice Provost for Academic Affairs at Florida Atlantic University," read the statement. "In accordance with the University's Collective Bargaining Agreement with the United Faculty of Florida union, by which the University and James Tracy are bound, faculty who receive such notice are afforded a grievance process. James Tracy has 10 days to respond to the notice after which final action may be taken. In accordance with university practice regarding personnel issues, the university will make no further comment for the time being."

The Sun-Sentinel reported Wednesday night that FAU officials did not disclose the specific reason for filing the notice, citing its confidentiality policy. Tracy can file an appeal within 10 days, otherwise the termination would become official.

The professor did not respond for comment, though the newspaper noted he has posted to his blog similar conspiracy theories with every major mass shooting since Sandy Hook.
