Oklahoma Football Roster News: Cody Thomas Leaving Sooners Baseball Team to Focus on Football
ByOklahoma Sooners' quarterback Trevor Knight was once considered a Heisman Trophy contender, but now the junior may have to win the starting position next spring.
According to NewsOK.com, the Oklahoma University (OU) baseball team confirmed Tuesday that Cody Thomas will be leaving the team to focus entirely on football. Going into his sophomore season, Thomas played limited snaps last season as Knight's backup after redshirting the previous season.
"I have decided not to play baseball this spring so I can focus on football," Thomas said in a statement he posted to his Twitter account Tuesday. "I want to thank Coach Hughes and the University of Oklahoma baseball program for making this opportunity possible. This has been a tough decision and I am thankful for the support."
It is not clear what Thomas could offer if given the starting position, as he only threw 66 passes in seven games, sometimes coming in when the Sooners were winning a blowout. But Knight and Thomas will also be competing with Baker Mayfield, who is going into his third season after sitting a season out for transferring from Texas Tech.
Knight dealt with an injury last season, which resulted in Thomas getting two starts, but his experience and supposed upside could be giving him the inside track for the position.
Thomas did not say why he chose to give up baseball in favor of football, but he had just one hit in 12 at bats last season. Yet he still showed enough promise as a true freshman to be drafted in the 30th round of the MLB Amateur Draft.
