A graduate from the University of Calgary is arrested for stabbing five people to death at an off-campus party in Brentwood which is by far the worst mass murder in Calgary.

"We have never seen five people killed at one scene," Police Chief Rick Hanson said. "The scene was horrific," Great Falls Tribune reports.

Police authorities said that the suspect, who is the son of a 33-year-old veteran of the Calgary police force, arrived at the house party on early Tuesday morning after finishing work at a grocery store. Moments later, the suspect is in his 20's, stabbed victims one after the other with a large knife. Hanson said that the victims' ages range from 22 to 27.

The officials have not yet determined the motive behind the murder and found no evidence that suggest the suspect was either drunk or under the influence of drugs. Hanson said the suspect brought a weapon along with him, instead used a knife from the house.

The area residents said the house was rented by University of Calgary students and the party was connected to the student union's annual Bermuda Shorts Day, Monday. BSD is an outdoor party on campus with live music and beer gardens to celebrate the final day of classes.

Doug Jones, a neighbor said there were about 12 students drinking beer at the backyard of the blue-sided house on Monday night. They weren't unruly but, discussed politics and stock market until 9:00pm. After which the party was taken inside.

Elizabeth Cannon, the president at the University of Calgary said that the campus community is "deeply saddened" by the news. It is a dreadful disaster as the young people passed away at an important period in their lifetimes. "It's a huge impact on all of us."

She said in a statement, "This is a very shocking and tragic day for our students and our entire university family. Our thoughts and condolences go out to the families of those who have lost their loved ones in this unimaginable and senseless tragedy."

Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi offered his condolences via Twitter. "Thoughts and prayers of all Calgarians are with the young people we lost this morning, their families, friends, and university community."
