The International Center of the University of California - Davis will have its grand opening this Friday, Apr. 21. The event will be celebrated with a party from 1 to 4 p.m.

The center is a three-story building that houses three Global Affairs units. It includes the vice provost-associate chancellor's office, Study Abroad and Services for International Students and Scholars as well as UC Davis Extension's Center for International Education.

According to a post in UC Davis' official website, the speakers for the event are Ralph J. Hexter, interim chancellor; and Rep. John Garamendi. D-Walnut Grove will give the keynote.

There are two masters of ceremonies: Paul M. McNeil, dean of UC Davis Extension, and Joanna Regulska, vice provost and associate chancellor of Global Affairs. Other speakers are associate vice chancellor and campus architect Clayton Halliday and Xinyi "Daisy" He, who is an international undergraduate student and student assistant to the chancellor.

For the rest of the afternoon, people can tour the building and visit open houses at Study Abroad, Services for International Students and Scholars (SISS), and the vice provost-associate chancellor's office. There are also other programs and activities.

One example is to see how Global Affairs is engaged internationally. The program is named Inspiring Global Curiosity, Understanding and Engagement. Visitors can add message to the SISS chalkboard, participate in a traditional Chinese tea ceremony and try Chinese paper cutting.

Another activity is Cultural Traditions and Activities, which allow visitors to witness the customs and practices of the international students at UC Davis. The program is scheduled for 2 to 4 p.m. at Room 1206.

Other activities are the Center of International Education Film Festival, Then and Now: A History of International Engagement at UC Davis, Envisioning the Future, International Students in Davis: An Interactive Quiz and UC Davis International "Human" Library.

The International Center will serve as a hub for the school's international presence and impact by establishing a centralized, welcoming environment. This is intended to be a place for key international programs and creating opportunities for all students, both international and domestic.
