Jennifer Garner testified in Congress on Thursday to help promote awareness for early childhood education and poverty across the nation. She was invited to Washington, D.C. to speak at the hearing of the House Appropriations Labor, Health and Human Services and Education Subcommittee.

The 44-year-old actress has been a trustee and ambassador for Save the Children charity since 2014. She has travelled all over the US and has observed how poverty affect families. In her testimony she mentioned the damaging effects of neglect and family issues were part of a larger problem in society.

Garner got emotional during her speech as she shared circumstances of poverty stricken families from one of her visits. She said that poverty dulls the senses, saps hopes and destroys the will. Garner urged the politicians to make significant investment in high-quality childhood education, proven effective programs like Early Head Start, childcare development block grants, preschool development grants and home visitation models.

Boosting college education is seen by many as a way to lift people out of poverty and also help combat growing income inequality, and increase upward social mobility. The nation's colleges continue to graduate fewer students who grew up in poor households. Discussing financial aid, early intervention, and transition programs may help even the odds for poor people hoping to attend college.

Save the Children's  provides early intervention in children's lives that can make a difference. Role models can help inspire these children to become goal oriented and give them a higher chance to aspire for college and a career according to US Magazine.
