This week's "Criminal Minds" episode wasn't kind on Reid (Matthew Gray Gubler). His predicament, however, will only worsen next week now that the long-teased story arc for this season's remaining episodes unravels. But will that be enough for the crime drama's dwindling viewers?

Episode 13 showcased Reid getting arrested in Mexico for cocaine and heroin possession. He was also charged in the stabbing of a doctor named Rosa (Ani Sava).

Reid was in the country -- albeit unofficially -- to obtain experimental drugs for his schizophrenic mother (Jane Lynch). A simple transaction with Rosa, however, turned awry when Reid was drugged -- presumably by Mr. Scratch (Bodhi Elfman) -- while they were in a motel room.

Reid couldn't remember what happened but he knows that someone else was in the room with him and Rosa. At one point, he remembers holding a knife.

Apparently, this was enough for the police to charge Reid with murder, and he got extradited to the U.S. because Rosa is an American citizen. Reid cannot have the FBI's outstanding legal counsel because he didn't declare his trip to Mexico.

Reid will get more "bad news" in next week's "Criminal Minds" episode titled "Collision Course," SpoilerTV reported. The rest of the BAU team, meanwhile, will investigate a number of deadly car crashes that involved both drivers and pedestrians. The episode airs on Wednesday, Feb. 22 at 9:00-10:00 p.m. on CBS.

Executive producer Erica Messer, who co-wrote episode 13 with cast member Kirsten Vangsness, promised "a really great story" for Reid. Messer told TVGuide that the man's problem will "get heightened every week" until Season 12 wraps up.

The BAU will do their best to prove that Reid is innocent. In the upcoming episode, Prentiss (Paget Brewster) will introduce him to Fiona Duncan, a friend of hers and is an excellent defense lawyer. Messer didn't confirm whether Mr. Scratch was responsible for framing Reid or not, but she said that the criminal has a huge presence in the remaining nine episodes.

Despite this exciting storyline, a chunk of the show's viewers is still boycotting "Criminal Minds" following Thomas Gibson's firing. The #NoHotchNoWatch boycott may have caused the program's falling ratings.

According to TV Series Finale, total viewers decreased 15.15 percent for Season 12 and 19.51 percent for the crucial 18-49 age demographic. As of late, the current season's 12^th episode got the lowest ratings at 6.7 million viewers and 1.17 million in the 18-49 demographic.
