Episode 11 of "Criminal Minds" Season 12 explored Spencer's (Matthew Gray Gubler) relationship with his mother, Diana (Jane Lynch), further. Apparently, that episode also served as a major turning point for one of the show's characters.

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, executive producer Erica Messer revealed that one of the long-running series' central characters will be taken "on a journey they have never been before." The pivotal plot will center on that character's personal history and it will significantly affect his/her professional life.

Messer said that the storyline is something that the "Criminal Minds" team "has never had to deal with" and they are "entering into the unknown" with it. She teased that the remaining episodes of Season 12 will be "heavily serialized" and will shock and blindside audience in a way that they have never felt before.

That plot was kicked off in this week's episode (titled "Surface Tension") centered on Spencer and Diana. Spencer decided to bring Diana home from the institution but the move proved to be challenging to them both.

In the episode, Spencer had to run home from work because Diana's caregiver couldn't handle taking care of a person with schizophrenia and Alzheimer's disease. Diana, in turn, believes that the caregiver was a spy who's trying to extract information out of her. She doesn't trust the next caregiver either.

Diana doesn't want anyone's help, and even Spencer's efforts to help her were turned to dust when she refused to take her medicine. This, of course, only cemented the fact that the woman needs Spencer's help more than ever and his professional work may get affected.

Spencer's predicament is no secret to the rest of the BAU team. In this week's episode, J.J. (A.J. Cook) told Rossi (David Mantegna) that Spencer's actions unsettle her and it could lead to serious trouble. Instead of the standard pills used for Alzheimer's and schizophrenia, Spencer has been using sketchy vials of medicine to treat his mother's condition. This ploy only angered Diana and pushed her to slap him.

Episode 12 titled "A Good Husband" will take the BAU team to a new case that involves unidentifiable male victims, SpoilerTV reported. The episode airs on Wednesday, Feb. 8 at 9:00-10:00 PM, ET/PT on CBS.
