On Thursday, the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit reopened a long-standing Apple vs Samsung patent lawsuit. The case originally started when Samsung was accused of imitating the iPhone's design nearly six years ago.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit officially reopened the patent lawsuit after the U.S. Supreme Court recommended it to stay open to figure out how much the South Korean tech giant would pay Apple Inc. in patent infringements, according to Law 360.

A month ago the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that Samsung is not obliged to pay $399 million in damages to the Cupertino based tech company. Wherein the amount was based on the total sales revenue Samsung acquired from its Galaxy series at the time.

The new decision of the U.S. Court of Appeals means the court must once again decide a new amount for Samsung to pay Apple in patent infringements based on total units, rather than individual components that went into the Galaxy handsets. In spite of that, the Cupertino based tech company made it known that the court decision will once again send a powerful message that stealing isn't right.

Nonetheless, Norman Foster, Dieter Rams, Calvin Klein, and over 100 other top designers filed an amicus brief in support of Apple Inc., arguing the Cupertino based tech giant is entitled to all profits Samsung has obtained from infringing designs. They cited a 1949 study showing that more than 99% of Americans could identify Coca-Cola's bottle by shape alone.

In spite of that, Samsung continued to appeal the court decision until the patent infringement case was deemed worthy of a Supreme Court review. The South Korean tech monster said that it shouldn't have to pay $399 million to use bezels, an icon grid and a rounded corner, Phone Arena reported.
