A lot of times, we can easily control workplace distractions. We just need a bit more discipline and focus to take care of the tasks at hand instead of giving in to these productivity killers.

Research from the University of California - Irvine found that the typical worker is only able to spend 11 minutes on a task before getting interrupted or moving on to another project. Professor Gloria Mark, who led the study, revealed that it can take approximately 23 minutes to get one's momentum back once workflow has been disrupted.

Sometimes, we are to blame for our distractions. Business Insider shared tips on how we can stop ourselves from interrupting our productivity.

1. Tune out

Nowadays, a lot of companies have adopted the open office floor plan. This is part of efforts to increase collaboration and communication. However, it did come with less privacy and more disruptions.

According to Maura Thomas, founder of RegainYourTime.com, these open offices actually inhibit productivity and creative thinking. It's best if you tune out the noise through relaxing music.

2. Stop multitasking

More and more experts have confirmed that multitasking hinders productivity. It is advised that workers should focus on one task instead of doing everything all at once.

"Think small," Thomas noted. "You don't have to persuade yourself to do everything on your to-do list; you only have to persuade yourself to do the next thing. Once you've selected a task to tackle, close everything else and just do that."

3. Take time to zone out

This may seem like the opposite of what you should be doing but you must understand that your brain needs time to process things. Like physical endurance, mental strength is limited. It is helpful to take a step back and let your mind wander; giving it time to recharge and refocus.

4. Stick to your schedule

Rendering overtime work is not productive at all. It will only further tire your body and mind. This can lead to more stress, sleep deprivation, burnout and other health issues. Stick to your schedule and do your best to finish your daily tasks within eight hours.
