Earlier this year, research firm SuperData pitched in an estimated report that the sales of PlayStation VR would reach 2.6 million units sold by the end of 2016. Now, the research group has updated that figure substantially downward.

The research firm SuperData is expecting PlayStation VR sales to be less than 750,000 in 2016, down significantly compared from their previous forecast. Nevertheless, it's not just Sony's virtual reality headset that the research firm is updating its sales expectations, as its estimates for Google's Daydream is now 261,000, which is down from 450,000.

Projections for other leading virtual reality headsets, such as HTC Vive (450,000 units), Oculus Rift (355,000 units), and Gear VR (2.3 million units) have not changed. Overall, the research firm SuperData is predicting that PlayStation VR will be the biggest loser of holiday 2016 when it comes to gaming, according to Game Industry.

The Director of Research at SuperData Research Stephanie Llamas, stated that the new figures have been updated and been downgraded for the reason of supply inconsistencies, lack of marketing and fewer units being sold than expected because of a relatively fragmented title line-up.

Llamas also said that Sony did not offer any first-party deals this weekend, and the company has also pointed out that PSVR looks even better on a PS4 Pro compared to a standard PS4 or slim, so their message to most gamers is to acquire the PlayStation 4 Pro first, then the PSVR later.

Furthermore, one of the challenges around VR headsets is the cost, as both the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive require a gaming PC, bumping the total cost of the system above $1,000 each. Meanwhile, the PSVR needs to be connected to a PlayStation 4 which will add up another $250 to $300. The Gear VR will be up for grabs for $100 or less, and runs on a Samsung Galaxy smartphone, Biz Journals has learned.
