Officials have confirmed the man found dead of an apparent gunshot wound in the hallway of a Ypsilanti apartment building is Demarius Reed, MLive.com reported.

Reed, a junior wide receiver for the Eastern Michigan University (EMU) football team, was found dead in the hallway of the off-campus apartment building around 7:15 a.m. His roommate found Reed and alerted the police.

Investigators spent about five hours at the scene, taping off the entire west entrance to the building while the examined the stairwell where he was found. Residents interviewed by police did not recall hearing any gunshots the night before or early in the morning.

The police have not released many further details and have not taken anyone into custody, all that is known currently is that a gunshot wound caused his death. Although it was not explicitly reported, the case appears to be a homicide.

EMU student Kristy Stanford lives in the same apartment building said she heard a group of people preparing for another party.

"I woke up this morning and someone was knocking on our door, but we didn't answer," she said. "We looked outside and we saw all of the caution tape. The police asked us questions like was it a party last night, did you hear gunshots or was there anyone lingering around."

Reed, a Simeon High School football standout, started all six games for EMU this year and caught 15 passes for 185 yards and a touchdown.

"We are all deeply saddened by the tragic news this morning involving Eastern Michigan University student Demarius Reed," school president Susan Martin said in a statement. "Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends, and his teammates on the football team. As we reported earlier, Demarius, a 20-year old junior majoring in Communication, Media and Theatre Arts and a member of the football team, was the victim of an apparent homicide."
