Police officials have initiated an investigation into a missing 19-year-old University of New Hampshire (UNH) student.

Jonathan Zygmont, a Windham high graduate, was last seen at about 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, in Portsmouth near Prescott Park. The first year student lives on the University campus.

Paul Dean, UNH Police Chief, said that the authorities do not suspect any foul play, but they are worried about his well-being. The police officials believe Zygmont was having relationship problems and was unhappy.

"He was reported missing by a female friend. Based on the information we have we are eager to find Jonathan and make sure he's OK," Dean said.

Zygmont is described as a white male, 5-foot-11 and 175 pounds. He was last seen wearing black shoes, khaki pants and a brown sweatshirt bearing the word 'Burton' in red lettering. He was carrying a North Face black backpack.

UNH officials are working with various law enforcement agencies to search for Zygmont including Portsmouth Police, Kittery Police, Durham Police, N.H. Marine Patrol and the U.S. Coast Guard.

"We've searched the area near Bow Street and along Ceres Street, as well as along the water," Deputy Chief Corey MacDonald said. "We are continuing to search,"

UNH spokeswoman Erika Mantz said that missing posters with a photo of Zygmont have been distributed.

Police urge anyone with information on Jonathan Zygmont's whereabouts to call (603) 862-1427.

According to school officials, Zygmont graduated from Windham High last year. He was on the honor roll and was part of the wrestling team as a freshman.

"Our support goes out to the family and the police in looking to find this young man," said Ryan Kaplan, the principal at Windham High.
