University of Texas has announced that it has chosen its next mascot and has disclosed that it is currently "in the midst of training."

The Silver Spurs Alumni Association has confirmed that they have selected the next longhorn who will don the name "Bevo." The organization is the alumni association of the UT campus at Austin and is tasked of taking care of the longhorn.

Bevo is expected to make his debut appearance before November 30, the same day of the anniversary of the time a Bevo first showed up in a University of Texas varsity game. Bevo will most likely be seen for the first time in public on UT's season opening football game against the University of Notre Dame, KVUE reported.

University of Texas President Gregory L. Fenves has emphasized the importance the mascot has on university life, calling Bevo a symbol of "Longhorn pride" and "Texas spirit" in the last 100 years. He also said that the mascot has an integral part of campus culture as it has been a fixture in the many successes the school's football team had in previous decades.

Bevo XIV, the latest Bevo, died in October 2015 after complications caused by bovine leukemia. The death of Bevo XIV affected many UT students, alumni and faculty as the longhorn has served as the Bevo mascot since 2004.

The season opener between UT and Notre Dame has been announced by ESPN as a primetime offering, the Elkhart Truth reported. It will be broadcasted on ABC, kicking off the games at 6:30 pm CT. The game was originally scheduled for September 3 but was moved to accommodate more time for the playoffs.

Bevo was not the original mascot for the university. The first one was a pitbull, which proved to be popular until it died due to a car accident in 1923.
