Sam Houston State top punter Lachlan Edwards has been drafted by the New York Jets. It appears that the Jets have already been eyeing the Australian native since the fifth NFLPA bowl.

Edwards' performance at the fifth NFLPA Bowl held in Carson, California apparently drew the attention of the New York Jets, as Your Houston News reported. Edwards himself claims that the Jets have been "keeping up" with him since the event. Eventually, he met up with the Jets' general manager and the rest of the team as well.

The Sam Houston State Bearkat seems impressed, and says that Jets is "a good organization." He did not hide his excitement at the thought of playing in the big leagues with them.

The punter's all-time career average is reportedly 42.9, placing him as the leader of the Bearkats. As Newsday noted, Edwards did not hesitate to answer when asked to name his best attributes and what makes him a good fit for the Jets.

"Probably my hang time. I've got a big spiral and I've got long legs, I get good hang time," Edwards notes. He also added that his directionals are one of his "strong points," as he has been working on it all season.

His parents from Australia have already called to congratulate him on the accomplishment. Meanwhile, it seems the he is not the only player from The Land Down Under that will play with the Jets.

While Edwards was a seventh-round pick, fellow Australian and free agent Tom Hackett will also join the ranks. Hackett was born in Melbourne and achieved considerable success in Australian Rules football.

It is a proud day for Australia, and for Sam Houston State. Surely Edwards will use all of his experiences from playing and training with the Bearkats to their full extent, as he plays with the New York Jets.
