College Basketball Recruiting 2016: Duke, Michigan State Already Building Nation's Top Classes

By

John Calipari may have ushered in college basketball's "one-and-done" era, but Mike Krzyzewski's recent dominance on the recruiting trail signaled it had finally become mainstream.

Krzyzewski led the Duke Blue Devils to his fifth National Championship with a talented collection of underclassmen led by Jahlil Okafor, one of the best freshmen in the nation last season. ESPN ranked his 2015 recruiting class the best in the nation, as three of his five commits are considered five-star talents.

But Krzyzewski is starting to build a class that could easily top the rankings a second consecutive year.

According to ESPN, five-star small forward Jayson Tatum and five-star shooting guard Frank Jackson already committed to Duke and are scheduled to arrive on campus next fall. Tatum ranks second on the 2016 ESPN 100 and Jackson 14th. As of Monday, Krzyzewski secured his third top-100 recruit from that class, with power forward Javin DeLaurier giving his word.

As DeLaurier told ESPN.com, "We're not done." Harry Giles, a five-star power forward and the top player on the 2016 ESPN 100, and Josh Jackson, a five-star small forward and the third player overall, are said to be considering offers from Duke.

Though early on, Michigan State head men's basketball coach Tom Izzo appears to be the likeliest candidate to play spoiler to Krzyzewski plans. Jackson is considering Michigan State and 247 Sports lists the school among his top four choices.

Michigan State is also considered the favorite to land a verbal commitment from Miles Bridges, a five-star small forward and the eighth overall player on the 2016 ESPN 100. Braxton Blackwell, a four-star small forward, is also considering Michigan State.

For the class of 2016, Izzo has three commits, Josh Langford the lone five-star prospect among them. The other two, Cassius Winston and Nick Ward, are highly rated four-star prospects.
