Dominique Hatfield Charged With Misdemeanor Assault for July 5 Incident

Shortly after being cleared of aggravated robbery, Dominique Hatfield is now charged with misdemeanor assault about a month after the alleged incident took place.

The now former University of Utah football player has not been summoned, nor is there an arrest warrant for him, but the alleged victim named him along with multiple other attackers, the Associated Press reported.

"I'm disappointed that they were filed," Greg Skordas, Hatfield's attorney, said of the misdemeanor assault charges in a statement. "We intend to address them immediately. I intend to get this case in front of a jury as soon as I can. I'm confident it's going to go the same way as the last case that was brought against him."

Salt Lake City detective Cody Lougy told the AP the investigation is ongoing.

KSL.com described the alleged victim as an "acquaintance" to Hatfield who asked him to stop "rolling marijuana into a blunt" at a party on July 5. The acquaintance was worried for other Utah student-athletes at the party because they were subject to random drug testing, a probable cause document obtained by KSL.com stated.

The alleged victim claimed Hatfield and other "unknown individuals" began hitting him in his face and elsewhere, leaving cuts and bruises on his face, shoulders, and back.

Hatfield faced aggravated robbery charges in late June that were since dropped, the AP noted. Prosecutors said at the time new evidence suggested Hatfield was not the primary suspect, but they left open the possibility of re-filing the charges.

Utah head football coach dismissed Hatfield, a cornerback, and did not reinstated him between the aggravated robbery charges being dropped and the assault charges' filing.

Liz Abel, a university spokesman, told the AP, "Dominique Hatfield's dismissal from our team remains in effect and certain conditions would still need to be met for him to be considered for reinstatement in the future."
