Tom Brady's Post-Grad Resume Carries an Important Lesson for College Students: Have a Backup Plan

By

Tom Brady may not have expected to be where he is now, as is evidence from his post-grad resume, which serves as an important lesson for prospective students today.

Brady posted a photo of his resume Thursday and indicated, even if jokingly, that he thought he "was going to need this" after dropping past the sixth round in the NFL Draft. The New England Patriots took Brady 199th overall, a compensatory sixth round selection, to be their third-string quarterback.

#ThrowbackThursday, indeed. Brady is now in the 15th year of an NFL career that is no doubt going to end in his induction to the pro football Hall Of Fame in Canton, Ohio.

But they don't call him Tom Terrific for nothing. He graduated from the University of Michigan - Ann Arbor (UM) and apparently made the most of his education, interning at Merrill Lynch during the summers of 1998 and 1999. According to his resume, he was an assistant to a senior sales broker.

What's more is U.S. News and World Report ranked UM as the third and fourth on lists for the best schools for finance and business, respectively. UM also ranked 29th on the publication's "Best National Universities" list.

As for his football career, Brady never had anything handed to him and his resume is evidence that he was prepared to follow up on a backup plan. If things did not turn out the way they did, Brady looked poised to have a nice career in finance.

At the start of his UM football career, Brady was listed seventh on the depth chart before working his way up to becoming the team's full-time backup for his first two seasons. He even reportedly sought counseling from a sports psychologist because of his futile struggle for playing time.

But Brady was the starter in 1998 and 1999, winning the Big Ten championship in the former season and the Orange Bowl in the latter. As he noted on his resume, Brady was named a team captain in '99, though his football accomplishments were under the "Additional" section at the bottom.
