Sony knew its PlayStation 4 would sell, they hoped it would outdo the Xbox One, but the company did not expect its sales to be quite as high as they have been.

As of Feb. 8, USA Today reported, Sony sold 5.3 million PS4 video game consoles worldwide, the company announced. According to data from the NPD Group, the PS4 was the top-selling console in January.

Microsoft has only released sales data up to January, when the company announced it had sold about 3 million Xbox One consoles in 2013. In the U.S., Sony said in an earlier statement, the PS4 nearly doubled the Xbox One in sales.

"I am thrilled that so many customers around the globe have continued to select PS4 as the best place to play throughout and beyond the holiday season," Andrew House, President and Group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc., said in a statement. "We are delighted that according to the NPD Group's latest data, PS4 was January's top-selling console in the United States."

The PS4 is set to launch in Japan on Feb. 22, the Sony's original hometown. Next month is also going to see major releases for both Sony and Microsoft, as "Titanfall" is released March 11 on the Xbox One and "Infamous: Second Son" comes out March 21 for the PS4.

"The PS4 system's momentum just keeps growing stronger, and we are extremely grateful for the continued passion and support of PlayStation® fans," House said in the statement. "February 22 sees the launch of PS4 in Japan, and I'm looking forward to Japanese fans sharing the excitement of the deep social capabilities and entertainment experiences only possible on PS4."

The PlayStation 4 costs $399 for the console and one controller, but various bundles including more accessories and games, offered by Wal Mart, Best Buy, Toys R Us and more, can run up to more than $500.
