PS4 Pro News: PS4 Pro Slim to Debut Soon; Media Player to Support HDR Content after 4K Video Update?

By

Sony is said to launch a new, much slimmer PS4 console this year. Plus, more updates on the current PS4 Pro. Details here!

Sony reportedly plans for PS4 Pro Slim release

As if PS4 Slim isn't thin enough, Sony reportedly gears up for a PS4 Pro Slim launch this year. Taiwanese media outlet, DigiTimes, which often leaks valuable information from insiders, claimed to learn that the slimmer PlayStation console will be introduced in the holiday season, WccFtech reported.

Additionally, the same media outlet reported Nintendo Switch shipment - predicting 20 million units distributed in the first year.

Based on the PS4 consoles timeframe, a slimmer PS4 Pro release is highly plausible as the older sibling is going to be a year old and needs a refresh.

The revamp is somewhat necessary given that the PS4 Slim only gets a slight gain from the original console. In fact, there's nothing changed except that it's smaller and a little more powerful. Fans would love to find out if it will finally support Ultra HD Blu Ray.

It's uncertain when Sony will announce a PS4 Pro Slim but fanboys can expect it on E3 2017 this June.

PS4 Pro now supports 4K video

The new update is very much welcomed by PS4 Pro owners. The console's Media Player app can now support playback of 4K VR. This means that the PS4 Pro is getting more powerful with the 4K videos in mp4 format. However, it's worth noting that the app only reads videos on the USB storage, according to Polygon.

For players who use external hard drive, it can only be used to save games and apps instead of playing videos or saving them. The media outlet went on to say that the support for HDR content may be added after the 4K support announcement.
