A campus event at the University of South Carolina (USC) promised two things: to serve pizza and to use pornography as a means of teaching sexual health, student newspaper the Daily Gamecock reported.
The event was held Tuesday night on campus and was hosted by USC's Bisexual, Gay, Lesbian, Straight Alliance (BGLSA). Club president Mason Branham said the purpose of the event was to inform attendees of all sexual orientations of healthy sexual practices by analyzing heterosexual and homosexual pornography, all over a meal of pizza.
BGLSA members checked IDs on the way in to make sure everyone in attendance was at least 18 years old. The meeting leaders also switched to a laptop using a hot spot when it came time to view the pornographic videos, instead of using the school's Wi-Fi.
"It's a college campus, so there's probably somebody in their dorm watching this on school Wi-Fi, so it's not totally shut down," Branham said at the event. "But we wanted an extra safety measure for BGLSA."
"If anyone is frightened by that title, the back door is still open," BGLSA President Mason Branham reportedly said to open the event. "Let the puns begin."
The event began with a movie clip from "Mean Girls" in which coach Carr tells the film's characters that having sex will automatically lead to pregnancy and death. This was followed by a game of "fact or crap" with information on sexual health.
Next came the event's main event, followed by a group discussion lead by Barnham and third-year sociology student and BGLSA member Kaitlyn Jones. Calling them "case studies," Barham and Jones lead the group in analysis of multiple viewings of heterosexual and homosexual pornography.
Perhaps most surprising was the lack of objection, or any that went out of its way to be made public. BGLSA was sure to show its gratitude to its event's attendees. The next day, BGLSA posted to their Facebook page thanking all who attended for their maturity, calling the event a success.
During the event, Barnham reportedly asked the crowd who had learned anything by a show of hands. Nearly every hand was raised.
