Marking India's most astonishing international achievement, 23-year-old artistic gymnast, Dipa Karmakar finished fourth in the Vaults final.

Karmakar, the first Indian female gymnast ever to compete in the Olympics stopped hearts of millions of onlookers as she flew in the finals of the vault at the 2016 Summer Olympics. Although fourth position might be off limits across the rest of the contingent, but this was without-a-doubt, India's most monumental international achievement.

Catching her best landing on the Tsukahara routine, ensuring her feet are kept compact, Karmakar kicked off with a 14.866. Then she perfectly pulled off the Produnova, achieving a 15.266. This took her to second position with 15.066, thus putting her into contention for a historic medal, The Indian Express reported.

It was quite a composed execution by the fearless Indian and there was hardly anything to fault considering her three-month preparation for the whole routine.

After Simone Biles left, Dipa moved down to third position. The stunning Cheng got the American 15.900, and the one to follow gave her gold. As a result, Karmakar was pushed to the fourth position.

With this win, Biles won her third gold medal.

Although, Dipa did not win any medals at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, she managed to inspire the world.

On Sunday, August 14, Karmakar missed an Olympic bronze medal in the women's vault gymnastic competition by just 0.15 points.

She was one of the two female gymnasts at Rio 2016 to perform the breathtaking Produnova vault a.k.a. "the vault of death," during the vault competition. Even the Olympic gold medalist, Simone Biles said she wouldn't even dare to give Produnova vault a shot.

When asked if she will ever perform the Produnova vault, Biles told the New Yorker that she wasn't trying to die.

Citing gymnastics is not quite a popular women's sport in India, there are a shortage of gyms for training, facilities and more importantly lack of funds from the government. Karmakar wore a substandard leotard and no shoes at the first tournament she ever participated in, BBC reported.

Clearly, making it to the 2016 Olympic Games wasn't an easy task for this fearless Indian gymnast; with a near medal finish , Karmakar has made her country proud.
