New England Patriots' tight end Aaron Hernandez is being investigated and could become a suspect in the execution-style murder of semi-pro football player Odin Lloyd, ABC News reported.
Law enforcement sources told the TV news network that Hernandez was not originally suspected, but now they would not rule it out. Hernandez was initially connected to the murder and his role in it seems to be getting bigger.
"He [Hernandez] has not been ruled out. We are not calling him a suspect, but he is definitely not in the clear," said one police official close to the investigation.
The Boston Herald reported no arrest warrant had been issued for Hernandez, despite some reports that rumored otherwise.
Lloyd's body was found in an industrial park at about 5:30 p.m. on Monday by a teenage jogger about a mile from Hernandez' North Attleborough, Mass. home.
An autopsy suggests Lloyd was killed between 1 a.m. and 6 a.m. Monday morning and the gunshot to the back of his head said it was an execution.
The body was found in close proximity to a car that had been rented by Hernandez and supposedly driven by the 23-year-old that night. Police are still trying to piece together the events that led to the homicide.
Law enforcement officials told Fox Boston, Hernandez, Lloyd and two other men were at a bar in Boston the night of the homicide. All four allegedly left in the same car with Hernandez at the wheel. The source said this was confirmed by a text message sent from Lloyd to a friend.
The source said it is still unknown what happened in the car or where they went, but only three men returned to Hernandez' home at the end of the night.
Police have searched the Patriots' star's home Tuesday and Wednesday with the authorization of a warrant.
"It has been widely reported in the media that the State Police have searched the home of our client, Aaron Hernandez, as part of an ongoing investigation," attorney Michael Fee said in a statement. "Out of respect for that process, neither we nor Aaron will have any comment about the substance of that investigation until it has come to a conclusion."
The NFL, the Patriots organization and Hernandez's agent all declined to comment on the ongoing investigation.
