Two BlackBerry Mid-Range Smartphones To Be Detailed In July?

By

BlackBerry CEO John Chen announced earlier this year the Canadian smartphone maker will unveil two mid-range Android smartphones in 2016, but now Chen has divulged that more details about the two smartphones will be disclosed sometime in July.

Chen noted he would uncover more details about the devices next month; however he did not reveal any further details.

Aside from a slew of leaked images of two smartphones rumored to be codenamed "Rome" and "Hamburg", information about both the smartphones is scarce at the moment, NDTV Gadgets reported.

Chen restated that both the devices will either be in the mid-range or mid to high segment. That said, BlackBerry will not be unveiling a smartphone for the high-end segment in 2016.

Further clarifying this, Chen told Mobile Syrup that he is not prepared to release that, although he initially planned to unveil it in July time frame.

Not too long ago, BlackBerry revealed its pretty average Q1 2017 results, which divulged that the Canadian smartphone maker managed to sell just 500,000 phones worldwide in the first fiscal quarter. This was a huge fall from 600,000 in the previous quarter.

This obviously didn't paint a pretty picture as it represented an ongoing decline of nearly 54 percent. But that's not all, BlackBerry reported a huge net loss of $670 million - the company's biggest loss in over two years.

Aside from this, there was a decline in sales as well - dropping to $400 million - a 39 percent downfall from 2015.

According to Chen, the strategic overhaul costs in the company are the real cause for the depressing numbers. However, he is still confident that BlackBerry can still profit from its device business.

In the midst of this financial turmoil, WhatsApp and Facebook have already wrapped up their support for BlackBerry devices.
