Apple confirmed at their second fall unveiling event that OS X Yosemite will be available as a free upgrade for all MacBook and iMac users.

During a keynote address Thursday, Apple Senior Vice President of Software Engineering Craig Federighi said Yosemite will be available "Today." After the keynote was finished, the desktop operating system was made available for download and install.

As Mashable noted, OS X Yosemite is designed to look and feel like iOS 8, while also providing more connectivity between the two. For example, users will be able to answer phone calls and send and receive non-iMessage texts from their computers.

Now that it is finally available, here are the necessary steps you need to take should you want to download it, thanks to Macworld.com.

1. Make sure your device is compatible

Rather than scouring the Internet trying to figure out if your computer can support Yosemite, an easy indicator is whether or not yours is running OS X Mavericks. Yosemite and Mavericks have the same system requirements.

If you're still not sure, Macworld has the full list of computers that are Yosemite-compatible.

2. Back up your files

This is just a good idea in general, even though OS X upgrades are relatively without much risk. It's a good idea to not just trust the cloud by itself, so put your files on a flash drive or an external hard drive, just in case something goes wrong.

As the saying goes, "you don't know what you got 'til it's gone."

3. Prepare to wait

OS X Yosemite's download file is 5GB and you know a lot of people will be wanting to download it the first day it is available. So, don't try to download Yosemite at a coffee shop, or at school, or any place with a lot of Internet users. Even with a good broadband connection, the download and install will take some time, especially on Thursday.

4. You may want to save the Installer

This is useful if you have multiple devices you want to put Yosemite on in order to skip the download phase the second time around. If you leave the installer alone, it will delete itself when it's no longer needed.

If you want to save it, drag it out of the Applications folder while holding the Alt (option) key, which will make a copy rather than an alias, and onto a flash drive or some other type of removable disk.

Yosemite is free so if this feels sketchy, fear not, the licensing allows for it.

5. Go ahead, click "Install"

After you've clicked the install button, just follow the prompts and, again, be prepared to wait. Once it's complete, you'll be able to configure OS X Yosemite to your liking.
