Hot Pockets Recall: Nestle Says the Product May Contain Diseased Meat

By

Nestle USA  issued a voluntary recall of Hot Pocket products as a result of a larger earlier recall from a California meat processing plant, Tucson News Now reported.

Two varieties of Philly Steak and Cheese Hot Pockets, including the Hot Pockets brand Philly Steak and Cheese in three different size, and Hot Pockets brand croissant Crust Philly Steak and Cheese in the two-pack box because  they may contain some of the 8.7 million pounds of meat recalled by Rancho Feeding Corporation in California, Tucson News Now reported.

"While Nestle did not purchase meat directly from Rancho, our procurement teams worked with our supply chain to understand whether any company in this chain may have purchased meat from Rancho Feeding at any time during 2013, the period of time covered by the Rancho Feeding recall," Nestle officials said in a statement.

The U.S. Department of agriculture suspended operations at Rancho Feeding Corporation, a slaughterhouse that supplies beef to the National School Lunch Program, on Monday because USDA regulators believe the meat company may have processed diseased and unsound animals "and carried out these activities without the benefit or full benefit of federal inspection," CNN reported.

"The plant's suspension will be lifted once we receive adequate assurances of corrective action," a USDA statement said.

No illnesses have been reported in relation to the recall.

Nestle said consumers should return the affected Hot Pocket products to the place of purchase for a full refund or contact Nestlé consumer services at 800-392-4057, CNN reported.
