Sony To Release At Least Five PlayStation Games on iOS and Android By March 2018 [VIDEO]

By

PlayStation will roll out at least five games on iOS and Android in March 2018. Sony's ForwardWorks will be at the helm for the smartphone games.

The tech company started this practice back in March 2016, following a restructuring that turned Sony Computer Entertainment into Sony Interactive Entertainment. The plan to shift PlayStation games for smartphones was actually first revealed during that time, according to Digital Trends.

When ForwardWorks was first unveiled, Sony stated that ForwardWorks will leverage the intellectual property of the numerous PlayStation dedicated software titles and its gaming characters. ForwardWorks will also deal with the knowledge of gaming development expertise, which was learned over the years with PlayStation business, that made the gaming application optimized for devices including smartphones in Japan and Asia.

However, Japan is likely the main reason for the tech company stepping into smartphone games, since mobile revenues account for over half of the country's games market. Currently, most of the Japanese tech giant's gaming revenues come from its PS4 console, which includes games and accessories.

The tech company does have a handheld of its own, the PlayStation Vita, but the gadget is a bit old and almost exclusively gaming-focused. The PlayStation Vita also makes it redundant for individuals with high-end smartphones, Apple Insider reported.

Anyway, though the PlayStation 4 continues to succeed while its PlayStation VR peripheral is sold out, Sony's lead over the gaming industry has been narrowed in recent months. After a very strong presence in North America over its first few years, the PS4 has sold fewer units compared to the Xbox One for three months in a row.

That being said, Sony's efforts will significantly fall behind Nintendo, which has already unleashed some titles, and is planning to debut the auto-runner video game "Super Mario Run" on iOS before 2017 ends.
