The School of Nursing at Duke University in North Carolina has named Marione E. Broome as its next dean.

The announcement was made Tuesday by Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis Chancellor Charles R. Bantz. Broome is currently a dean and distinguished professor at the Indiana University School of Nursing.

She is considered one of the top leaders in nursing in the United States.

"Dr. Marion Broome is a nationally recognized researcher who took the challenge of improving an already successful School of Nursing and succeeded," Bantz said in a statement.  "She improved teaching and research facilities, established a leading edge simulation lab to improve patient care, guided the development of on-line programs, established endowed chairs, and recruited the next generation of nursing leaders. And, her scholarly achievements resulted in her being named a distinguished professor during her tenure as dean. Her contributions to Nursing, IUPUI, and Indiana University are impressive."

Broome became university dean in 2004. Under her leadership, the nursing school has consistently been named among the top 10 schools of nursing in the country by the National Institutes of Health and in the top 15 graduate schools by US News & World Report. She has overseen the construction of new educational facilities and the expansion of programs to help address the nursing shortage.

"I am honored and proud to have served as the fifth dean of the Indiana University School of Nursing.  Building on the excellence in education and research programs of the School has been both challenging and rewarding. I am confident that new leadership, working with the faculty, staff, and community partners, will take this amazing School into new frontiers," Broome said in a statement.

Her recent honors include the National League of Nursing Award for Outstanding Leadership in Nursing Education. She founded the Society of Pediatric Nurses and was inducted as a charter member of the Sigma Theta Tau International Researcher Hall of Fame in 2010. In 2013, Broome and Linda Everett, executive vice president and chief nurse executive at Indiana University Health, were awarded the Practice/Academic Innovative Collaborative Award for Sigma Theta Tau International in recognition of their leadership in forging a partnership across both systems.
