Police are searching for a suspect who shot and injured a Pennsylvania student outside a university athletic center Monday evening, Reuters reported.

The undergraduate student at Widener University arrived at Crozer-Chester Medical Center with at least one gunshot wound is in critical but stable condition. He was shot in a parking lot near the Schwartz Athletic Center at around 8:45 p.m. on Monday, officials at the private institution told Reuters.

"All indications are that this was not a random act of violence," Dan Hanson, the university's spokesman, said in a statement to Reuters early Tuesday morning.

A revolver was used in the attack and the wounded student, who had not been identified, called the police himself, police said, according to Hanson.

Reuters reported that the shooting follows others at schools in Philadelphia and in New Mexico over the past week, and fuels the national debate over whether there need to be stricter gun control regulations.

Hanson said investigations are ongoing; police were searching the area, including nearby woods and beyond.

Widener University in Chester, Pa., founded in 1821, serves about 6,300 undergraduate and graduate students.

In Northern Philadelphia, two students were shot and wounded at a high school on Friday, and in New Mexico, a 12-year-old boy is accused of seriously wounding two students with a shotgun last Tuesday.
