Three months after the release of "Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare," Activision admitted that taking the game to an outer space setting was a mistake.

Though "Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare" did not fare that well with its intended demographic, the game was still one of Activision's biggest games in 2016. Activision owned up that the spacefaring iteration of "Call of Duty" was not the success it planned.

During investors call, Activision's COO Thomas Tippl and CEO Bobby Kotick noted the reaction of fans revolting against the game. The proof was evident when the Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare" official trailer reveal was disliked by three million total viewers.

Further proof was the lower-than-expected sales of "Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare" last year. However, it is interesting to note that "Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare" became the best-selling game in the United States for 2016, although it fell short of the success of its predecessors, according to IGN.

As such, Activision is set on rectifying its mistake and said that this year's "Call of Duty" will take the game back to its roots, Digital Spy reported. This would mean that "Call of Duty" would revert to its terrestrial origins and engaging in traditional combat that players are used to and liked.

However, it is of note that Activision might have said this to placate shareholders concern. Cinemablend notes that "Call of Duty" developer, Sledgehammer Games, reportedly has already spent three years into making and developing the next "Call of Duty" game.

It is, therefore, worth mentioning that at this stage of development, the next iteration of "Call of Duty" already has an established narrative, gameplay, and elements to the game. At this crucial stage, it would be highly unlikely that Sledgehammer Games will overhaul what they have already worked on just because its publisher, Activision, has learned what the fans of the franchise really want.

The next installment of "Call of Duty" has not been disclosed as well as its date of release. With Activision mentioning the game in its investor call; it is assured that the next "Call of Duty" game will have a release schedule within the current year.
