A man involved in a custody battle with his ex-wife is suspected of killing four people and wounding three others in a rampage that spanned two parishes in Louisiana before killing himself, Fox News reported.

Ben Freeman, 38, attacked his former in-laws, his onetime boss at a hospital that fired him and his current wife.  The incidents took place on Thursday night in Lafourche and Terrebonne parishes.

The three survivors remained hospitalized on Friday, Brennan Matherne, spokesman for the Lafourche Parish Sheriff's Office, told Fox News. Two of them are in critical condition.

"We are still investigating motive and trying to piece together the sequence of events along with the Terrebonne Parish Sheriff's Office," he said.

Reuters reported that Freeman first attacked Lafourche Parish Councilman Louis Phillip Gouaux, his wife Susan and their daughter Andrea. The wife died in the shooting and the other were two were in critical condition after surgery early Friday at an area hospital.

"Deputies learned Ben Freeman is a former son-in-law of the Gouaux's, having been formerly married to their daughter, Jeanne Gouaux," Matherne said.

The Courier newspaper in Houma reported that Louis Gouaux called 911 at around 6:40 p.m. Thursday from his home in Lockport telling dispatchers that he had been shot in the throat.

Freeman is suspected of going to the home of hospital administrator Milton Bourgeois 20 minute later and opening fire on his former boss.  Reuters reported that Bourgeois and his wife were shot. Bourgeois was shot at close range and died shortly after; his wife was in critical condition at a hospital.

Later that night Freeman's body was found in a car along the side of a road with a shotgun wound to the head, Reuters reported.  

The body of his current wife, Denise Taylor Freeman, was found at their home and it was not yet known how she died, Matherne said.
