"Star Trek: Discovery" is officially engaged and currently being filmed. A video teaser was released recently that gave a glimpse on sets, the new crew uniforms, a computer model of the new ship, and the captain's chair.

The video did not show much but it delved on a bit of a history lesson how the "Star Trek" franchise started by its creator, Gene Roddenberry back in 1964. The new franchise is the next feature in the "Star Trek" series, following "Star Trek: Enterprise" which concluded in 2005.

"Star Trek: Discovery" is a creation of Bryan Fuller and Alex Kurtzman and will be telecast on CBS All Access. Reportedly, "Star Trek: Discovery" is the first series developed specifically for the new CBS service.

CBS has initially scheduled "Star Trek: Discovery" to set off on its maiden voyage this January 2017, However, the show was pushed back to May later this year to allow the writers to fully fine-tune the scripts. Fuller and Kurtzman are fully aware that bringing "Star Trek" back on air carries a huge responsibility, as they said in a joint statement, reported Digital Spy.

Notably, the series will be distributed concurrently by CBS Studios International on Netflix in 188 countries, Bell Media's Space Channel in Canada, and Crave TV, according to Deadline.

"Star Trek: Discovery" cast

There will be an interesting twist to this version of "Star Trek" for the lead character will not be the captain of the ship, but its lieutenant commander Rainsfold, to be played by Sonequa Martin-Green of "The Walking Dead." Other confirmed members are Michelle Yeoh, playing Captain Han Bo of the Starship Shenzhou, Doug Jones, playing alien science officer Lt. Saru and Anthony Rapp, playing Lt. Stamets. Also in the cast is a trio of Klingons, Chris Obi as T'Kuvma, Shazad Latif as Kol, and Mary Chieffo as Rell.

"Star Trek: Discovery" will also be the first in the franchise to feature an openly gay character as reported in our earlier report.

"Star Trek: Discovery" the ship

The official name of the starship is the U.S.S. Discovery (NCC1031). Based on the ship test trailer shown at comic-con, the starship's retro design had fans speculate the new series will be another "Star Trek" prequel. Fuller confirmed back in August that "Star Trek: Discovery" is set 10 years prior to Captain Kirk's five-year mission.

The series will have an initial 13 episodes. Each episode will not be in the traditional episodic format but will be told as a continuous novel, taking advantage of the streaming format for the show.
