The second installment of "Annabelle" returns to the screen this year with the release of "Annabelle 2."

"Annabelle" scored by scaring up $257 million at the worldwide box office during its theater run in 2014. Peter Safran and James Wan, who are responsible for bringing horror through "The Conjuring" movies, are producing the sequel, "Annabelle 2" once again. The sequel will be directed by David F. Sandberg (Lights Out) and penned by Gary Dauberman who is returning to the horror scene after writing the first movie, according to Movieweb.

"Annabelle 2" plot

The first movie revolved around the story of John Form and his pregnant wife Mia and their dealings with the doll from hell, "Annabelle." The sequel brings into the picture a dollmaker and his wife who welcomes a nun in their home along with several orphaned girls, which unfortunately for them, is also, where the dollmaker is at work on his possessed creation who soon targets the guests, according to Screen Rant.

"Annabelle" was introduced in the opening scene of "The Conjuring," a kind of movie doll that looks so disgustingly terrifying no one in his or her right frame of mind would want to keep it. Additionally, "Annabelle" is possessed by an angry demon ready to pounce at unsuspecting victims in a flash.

"Annabelle 2" is an origin story of sorts, which would provide how a doll came to be inhabited by pure evil. As far as the original is concerned, the movie was set in 1969. The protagonists of "The Conjuring" had the doll under lock and key in 1971.

Given this very short time frame to work on, the new movie had to be either set beyond 1971 where "Annabelle" escapes her captivity or set it back to where it all began. The choice of exploring "Annabelle's" origin seems more logical for "Annabelle 2."

However, will "Annabelle" be able to scare up the box office once again come Aug. 11, 2017?
