"Voltron," the classic 1980s animated sci-fi adventure, is making a strong comeback this year, but this time it's different -- it's now a live-action movie.

According to Forbes, a live-action Voltron had been in the works for some time and Universal, which has inherited the project after it acquired DreamWorks Animations, is now moving forward with the project.

When Universal acquired DreamWorks Animation, the firm came with several prospective projects to deal with and one of them is a live-action Voltron movie made by Jeffrey Katzenberg when he was still working with the DreamWorks Animations.

Reports said that David Hayter, who wrote the first two X-Men movies and the 'Watchmen', has been tapped for the movie's script.

As GameSpot reported, Universal has declined to comment and gave no further details about the rumored live-action Voltron movie.

For a quick start, 'Voltron: Defender of the Universe' is an American animated television series that features a team of astronauts who pilot five giant shaped lion-shaped crafts that come together to form the supergiant Robot called 'Voltron'.

The original 'Voltron' TV series was produced as a joint venture between World Events Productions and Toei Animation and has quickly become the top-rated syndicated children's show for two years during its first run.

The 'Voltron: Legendary Defender' was one of the properties acquired by Universal when it bought DreamWorks Animation earlier this year. Currently, the Voltron: Legendary Defender is available on Netflix with its first season made its premiere in June and the second season slated to hit the streaming service by next year.

This is not the first time we heard stories about a live-action Voltron movie. The live-action Voltron movie has been in development since 2005, with producer Mark Gordon and scriptwriter Justin Marks of 'The Jungle Book'. Unfortunately, the project has never materialized.
