In a study conducted at Sahlgrenska Academy and published in Cell Metabolism, scientists have suggested that diets that are rich in fish oil may aid in weight reduction, Clapway reports.

In the study that was conducted on mice, the researchers transferred microbes associated with a fish oil diet into mice to see their impact on the health of mice. The mice that received the microbes associated with fish oil diet were resilient against diet-induced weight gain and inflammation, whereas the mice transplanted with gut microbes associated with a lard diet were not protected against weight gain and inflammation.

The researchers found that diets that are rich in fish oil produced very different bacteria in the stomachs of mice than those that are rich in lard. The research also demonstrated that gut microbes are an independent factor that increases inflammation and that probiotics might help counter the effects of a greasier diet.

The researchers fed either lard or fish oil to the mice for 11 weeks. They found out that lard promoted the growth of bacteria, which can be linked to gut inflammation, while the fish oil diet decreased the bacteria that are known to reduce weight gain as well as improve glucose and metabolism in mice.

Through this study, the researchers plan to identify interventions in healthy humans.
