Astronauts Preparation for 2035 NASA First Manned Mission
Astronauts who will composed the team for NASA first manned mission are reportedly preparing for their expedition coming 2035. According to The Daily Caller, as part of the preparation, NASA has designed a habitat called "Ice Home" or commonly known as igloo for the astronauts to settle in when they finally landed in Mars.
Accordingly, such an abode is likely to be more cost-effective because the materials to be used to build an "Ice Home" is already found in Mars; thus, shipping materials from Earth will not be necessary because NASA has presumed that ice are readily available in the Utopia Planitia Region of the Red Planet. Furthermore, they presumed that Mars has more buried water in the form of ice on that region than the earth's Lake Superior.
How "Ice Home" Could Protect the Astronauts?
Living in an "Ice Home" for the longer time will give biological benefits to the astronauts. According to Kevin Krempton, NASA Ice Home Principal Investigator, "Ice Home" have the capacity to lower down the dosages of galactic cosmic rays absorbed by the astronauts that cannot be done houses structure built from aluminum materials, Space.com reported.
Aside from shielding the astronauts from GSC, "Ice Home" also provides a pressurized working environment where the scientists won't have to breathe the dust from the equipment they are working with while wearing their environmental suit. This saves the astronauts from the stress of working with a pressurized gloves.
Inside Look at Mars "Ice Home"
Generally, NASA's concept on "Ice Home" would not be a typical structure that is akin to a cave. As added by Krempton, the structure will be made of translucent materials so that the light could pass through it and dwellers won't feel trapped in a dark cave. "Ice Home" will be made to house four dwellers and will have areas for work, recreation, logistics, food production and sleeping.
