It would seem that ABC's "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." seem to have been making it a habit of bringing in characters that the Marvel movies would not make movies of. That's the reason why no one at the 2016 San Diego Comic Con was caught off-guard with their announcement of bringing in the Spirit of Vengeance, "Ghost Rider."

Now. having Ghost Rider in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. seem like showrunners are bringing in a character that already has existing movies, but the Ghost Rider that they have announced is not "Johnny Blaze," who is more known to a vast majority of comic book fans. Instead, they decided to use a less-familiar version in the form of "Robbie Reyes." But according to Screen Crush, Co-executive producer Jed Whedon, explained that they had the option of getting Johnny Blaze, while also mentioning that they have thought of getting "Nicolas Cage" to reprise his role from the films, but Cage declined the offer.

Co-showrunner Maurissa Tancharoen explained that a more diverse and youthful Robbie Reyes would be a much better fit with the much more dramatic tone of the ABC superhero show. Co-showrunner Jeph Loeb just stated that the decision for using the Robbie Reyes version is based from family values.

On a different note, in a report by Cinema Blend, the team has experience their fair share of challenges. The last encounter with Hive left them discouraged, as well as experienced the death of a member which had an impactful effect on them that pesists in the following months. In the upcoming season the agents will be diving into grimmer territory the result of their decision could affect them with dire consequences. The consequences that they might encouter could be the catalyst for the MCU introduction of Ghost Rider. There is also an important question of whether he will be an ally or an enemy in season 4.
