Tragic Mount Everest Climb Update: Marisa Strydom’s Club Puts-Up Fundraising Webpage to Fund Recovery Efforts [VIDEO & LINK]

A fundraising webpage established by Maria Strydom's St Michael's netball club named "For Maria" is trying to raise the estimated $40,000 needed to recover her body and transfer it to Kathmandu.

On Thursday, Strydom's mother, Maritha Strydom thanked those people who had pledge funds to assist send home her daughter's body back to Australia. She posted in Facebook that their family has been humbled by the many pledges of assistance and tributes coming in for her daughter and support for Robert Gropel and the family, The Guardian reported.

Maritha's Facebook post included a link to the fundraising page, "For Maria." The website reads, "she was a leader, our team mate and most outstandingly our friend. Now it is our turn to give back to Maria and her family." 

Meanwhile in Mount Everest, Seven Summit Treks Managing Director, Mingma Sherpa said, the guides are still working to recover the body of Dr. Strydom. Her family is hopeful it will arrive in Kathmandu by the weekend. According to her sister, the situation is "looking positive." They have reached the body of the Monash University lecturer at 7,600 meters and intend to transport it down to camp two Thursday. They are positive that the body can be transferred to Kathmandu via helicopter on Friday, Sherpa said by phone from Nepal, The Guardian added.

The unfortunate climber's husband, Dr Robert Gropel stays in Kathmandu hoping for positive news from the mountain they climbed before it claimed the life of his 34-year-old wife last week. Heinz and Patricia, Gropel's parents, are in Nepal with their son, The Guardian quipped. According to them, the Melbourne vet is "extremely devastated and heartbroken" after he was enforced to depart his partner on the peak after she passed away due to altitude sickness.

Strydom had exhausted 31 hours on top of Everest's South Col and had been stabilized with medicine and oxygen, Expedition leader Arnold Coster revealed.
