Ezekiel Elliott's Postgame Comments Weren't Wrong, Just Indelicate

By

Ezekiel Elliott expressed frustration over Ohio State's 17-14 loss to Michigan State as earnestly as anyone, even if his comments were indelicate.

"How we lost, I just feel like we weren't put in the right opportunity to win this game, we weren't put in the right situations to win this game," ESPN quoted Elliott telling reporters at the postgame press conference. "I don't think Michigan State was better than us. They weren't. We didn't execute.

"Honestly, this is my last game in the Shoe," he said. "I mean, there's no chance of me coming back next year."

Elliott carried the ball just 12 times (three less than quarterback J.T. Barrett) for 33 yards and one touchdown. As a team, the Buckeyes rushed for 86 yards on 29 carries and only reached the end one on the ground once. No one had a single rush longer than 10 yards.

Elliott also had a leg infection that head coach Urban Meyer said did not affect the running back. Hospitalized earlier in the week for an infected scratch, Elliott was cleared to play and deemed fully healthy at game time.

So what went wrong? In his own postgame comments, Meyer agreed with Elliott's comments, stating he was "not content" with the team's play calling, most of which he admitted he is responsible for.

"I call a lot of plays anyways. So finger will be pointed right here. And I have to do better. We didn't - very conservative. Seemed like we were backed up a lot," Meyer told reporters. "And I thought we had a good positioning when we downed the ball on the 3-yard line in the fourth quarter. And then they knocked it out and put us back there. And then we tried to take a shot, and then they're second-and-10, stopped the clock, and then you try to punt with that driving wind in your face, and it was tough."

Elliott also had more postgame comments not as widely distributed, some he made via Twitter.

It does not seem as though Elliott will miss any time against Michigan on Saturday, a game that could wind up being a Big Ten Championship play-in if Michigan State loses.
