Indiana Basketball: Devin Davis, Hanner Mosquera-Perea Dismissed for Breaking Team Rules

By

The Indiana University (IU) men's basketball team dismissed two players for a violation of team rules.

According to ESPN, two IU police officers cited Devin Davis, a junior forward, for possession of marijuana in an amount less than 30 grams. Hanner Mosquera-Perea, a senior forward, was also dismissed from the team though he was not named in the police report.

Lt. Craig Munroe, an IU Police spokesman, told ESPN the department is investigating Mosquera-Perea's involvement in the incident. He said two officers were responding Monday night to a complaint of a marijuana smell that led them to Davis' room. Munroe said the officers found the marijuana in a backpack that belonged to Davis when he let them search the room.

"Indiana Men's Basketball announces that (junior) Devin Davis and senior Hanner Mosquera-Perea have been dismissed from the program effective immediately for not living up to their responsibilities to the program," IU said in a statement obtained by the Indianapolis Star.

Davis was only cited and was not placed under arrest. Though Mosquera-Perea was not confirmed to be involved in the incident, it his second strike with the Hoosiers, as he was arrested in Feb. 2014 for driving while intoxicated. He was still on probation for that arrest.

"They are young people that have made some poor choices, you don't stop supporting them or believing in them, but we just couldn't go forward," IU head men's basketball coach Tom Crean told the Star. That's a terrible feeling."

The Hoosiers have had their fair share of off-court troubles of late. In April 2014, senior guard Yogi Ferrell and junior guard Stanford Robinson were cited for consumption of alcohol by a minor and possession of false identification.

Davis had also missed all of last season for an incident last Nov. in which sophomore forward Emmitt Holt, 18 at the time, hit him with a car. Holt had a blood-alcohol level of 0.025 and Davis was hospitalized with a serious head injury.
