Leaving home to start college or university is an exciting time for young people. Yet, deciding where to stay can be terrifying. What will be better; living on or off campus?

It can be quite overwhelming to choose which courses or subjects to take at college, but now you're faced with choosing suitable accommodation as well. 

Whether you're a freshman or in your second or third year studying, this is a decision that most students face. During the first year, some prefer on-campus living to help them acclimatize to their new surroundings. Some institutions may require that you do so.

However, there are so many factors to consider when making this decision. It needs to be something that suits you for an extended period.

Let's look at the various options. Perhaps it can help you make a much more informed decision.

The Off-Campus Choice

Advantages

• Off-campus accommodation can be much more spacious. You might even have a bathroom to yourself if you're not sharing. 

• You'll also have more independence and the freedom to move around without any restrictions. It's an excellent option to help you get a sense of what adult life is all about. You'll be responsible for your cooking, cleaning, and even paying utility bills. 

These are things that will prepare you for post-college life when you're working on your own.

• Depending on the city or town you find yourself in, the rental of off-campus accommodation could be cheaper than staying on-campus. It can also save you a lot more if you share with someone or live with a relative near your college.

• You can have more control over your diet. Campus cafeterias might not always accommodate everyone's needs.

Disadvantages

• Being off campus can create a feeling of isolation. You might miss out on activities that happen in the evening or on weekends.

• Although being an independent adult is great, there are responsibilities that could be stressful.

• Depending on your location in proximity to campus, you might need transportation to and from your home. This will result in additional expenses.

The On-Campus Choice

Advantages

• Being on campus allows you to be part of a more significant community and to experience the excitement and vibrancy of college life.

• You'll also have access to much more amenities without spending extra. You could have access to a gym, internet, and meals. You'll have a furnished dorm with the basic necessities.

• There won't be any problem with commuting, with regards to time or finances. 

• You'll have round-the-clock access to  resources available to assist you with your studies, like the library and study groups.

Disadvantages

• There might be too much distraction on campus for you to focus on your studies. You would need to be very disciplined.

• You might have to share your bedroom with more than one person. The bathrooms are also communal. This style of living can infringe on your time and personal space.

• You could find cheaper accommodation elsewhere, depending on the town you live in; some residents offer room and board at a much lower rate.

• If you drop out of college for some unforeseen reason, you'll be liable for penalties. 

Conclusion

Deciding between on-campus or off-campus living is not an easy task. As you can see, it will depend a lot on what you like and what you can afford.

You might not like sharing your living space with others, but can you afford not to? You might not be ready to take on household chores on your own.
