A Salisbury University, SU, panel has extended the suspension of SU chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Maryland Sigma, by another 15 months for violating conditions of reinstatement.

Richard Culver, spokesman for SU, said that the Greek social fraternity's initial one and a half year suspension  is now extended to another 15 months for recruiting members during this period.

The fraternity will be reviewed in the summer of 2015 to determine its return in the fall. If the group returns to the campus they will be placed immediately on a probationary period till summer 2017.

The SU chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsilon, SAE, faced tough disciplinary actions November 2012 for disobeying the university's alcoholic beverage policy, participating in hazing activities and beating a pledge with a paddle. According to the Salisbury Police Department, the hazing incidents took place in spring 2012 at residences on Camden Avenue and West Locust Street.

Last week, the national SAE headquarters suspended the SU chapter effective immediately.

Dane Foust, vice president of Student Affairs at SU, said that as a result of hazing and alcohol abuse allegations, the Sigma Alpha Epsilon at the time received 2½ years of sanctions including suspension orders and a yearlong probationary period. Foust said that the suspension should have ended this May and the fraternity would have begun the probationary period. The recruitment process was scheduled to begin fall 2014.

But recently, the Student Affairs division found that the campus chapter had been recruiting members while on suspension, triggering 4½ years of sanctions against the SAE.

 "The violation related to recruiting while under suspension," Culver said. "Information about all the sanctions was included as part of a campus email sent [Friday]. A hearing has been held and Sigma Alpha Epsilon has been found to be in violation of its suspension," Delaware Online reports.

Besides Sigma Alpha Epsilon, the SU chapter of the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity was also suspended in 2010 for five years.
