Apple hasn't refreshed its iMac family since 2015 and the 2017 is a big year for the Cupertino giant as it is expected to reveal the major upgrades for its desktop PC iteration.

A recent report suggests that the iMac 2017 will use Intel Kaby Lake with the Core i7 7700k prepared for its top end model. All of Apple's upcoming desktop PC variants are expected to rock 5K display, MacWorld reported. It's arguable that shift to Retina display technology is one of the biggest overhauls expected in the upcoming iMac variants.

Other components to be seen in iMac 2017 are the USB type C port and Thunderbolt 3. As far as the GPU is concerned, AMD Polaris will reportedly be in tow to offer advanced graphics performance, PC Advisor has learned. For the 27-inch model, Droid Report predicts that the top tier will sport OLED Touch Bar like the MacBook Pro 2016.

There isn't any source to authorize the claims and what's under its hood is anyone's guess. However, based on the previous reports, the idea to bring 5K Retina iMac with OLED Touch Bar is highly plausible to meet VR demands.

It's no surprise that the iMac has always been pitted against the Surface Studio. Microsoft powerful desktop machine is Apple's biggest contender after it manages to deliver impeccable performance, all in one.

If the iMac 2017 will come with Intel Kaby Lake chip and the rumored VR-ready desktop is to be believed - the desktop PC would be a Surface Studio killer. And if it's priced reasonably, it might give a run for the money.

Apple remains mum on the iMac 2017 release date but reports hint that the Cupertino giant will likely unveil the desktop refresh at WWDC 2017 happening in June 5.
