As Qualcomm's Snapdragon processors can do a lot of other stuff instead of just being a processor, the tech company will no longer brand the Snapdragon system-on-a-chips (SoCs) as processors. Qualcomm will rename the Snapdragon as platforms instead.

Qualcomm announced that they will diversify its products in the coming months, kicking off with the rebranding of its Snapdragon processors. In Qualcomm's official blog post, the company stated that the move isn't seismic, but they believe that it will take the company in the right direction and that it will help them better demonstrate the overall value of their chip. The tech giant wants their Snapdragon offerings to not just be known as a processor, but instead it will be dubbed as a platform.

Qualcomm's move indicates that the company wants to sell its products to more than just phone manufacturers, as there's a growing consumer in IoT products, laptops and automotive. Qualcomm hopes that its more broad branding approach will be easier for the company to sell the benefits of the Snapdragon brand. Nonetheless, the tech giant's change in branding will help its consumers to know that there's far more these platforms can do, according to Android Central.

At this point, Qualcomm is offering four Snapdragon processors, the 200 series for entry-level devices, the 800 series of high-end devices, as well as the 400 and 600 series for mid-range devices. The 200 series processors will be dubbed as the Qualcomm Mobile.

That being the case, Qualcomm Snapdragon processors remains the chosen processor for major smartphone manufacturers. The Google Pixel 2, HTC 11, Samsung Galaxy S8 and Galaxy Note 8 smartphones are all expected to come along with a Qualcomm Snapdragon chipsets. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chipset, which is the successor of the Snapdragon 820/21 processor, is slated to ship commercially in devices during the first half of 2017, CBR Online reported.
