Purdue University has resumed "normal operations" not even two hours after a shooting was reported on campus and the suspect was taken into custody.

Police said they had a suspect in custody less than an hour after a shooting was reported at the research school in Indiana. The school confirmed the shelter in place was lifted on their official Twitter account.

Greg McClure, a school spokesman, told the Associated Press police are not yet releasing information on injuries or on the suspect. The school's engineering building is on lockdown and the campus has been placed under a shelter in place order. Around noon, a shooting was reported near the engineering building of the school's West Lafayette campus, about 60 miles from Indianapolis. According to the school's website, police have cleared the building and are continuing a routine search of the premises. The shelter in place was lifted around 1:15 p.m.

One student told the Journal and Courier they heard two gunshots and then saw someone with blood on their hands, followed by police rushing toward the building. Another student said a voice rang out in the building hallway urging people repeatedly to "get down." An ambulance did transport someone to a local hospital, but it is not clear what or how many injuries were sustained in the incident.

I wasn't exactly expecting it to happen up here," Purdue freshman Zachory Stewart, 19, told the Journal and Courier.

Other shootings and reports of gunman on college campuses have grabbed headlines semi-frequently in the past few months. At Central Connecticut State University, the campus was locked down after a person was spotted with fake weaponry in a Halloween costume. An unidentified person called in a gunman hoax on Yale's campus and someone was spotted near the University of New Haven with a rifle.

Another Purdue spokesperson, Liz Evans, said publicly shots were fired and also confirmed a suspect was apprehended, but she had no further details.

"Approximately noon is when the report of shots fired came in from Electrical Engineering building," she said. "One person is in custody."

Despite the shelter in place being lifted, the engineering building remains closed as police are likely still giving it a precautionary search.
